News has broken that Rafael Devers has been traded to the San Fransicso Giants. This comes just hours after the Red Sox swept the New York Yankees and were seemingly poised to turn the season around.
I am stunned. No matter how toxic the clubhouse seemed to get, I never imagined that a contract this large and a player this integral to the franchise would get traded out of nowhere like this.
Why did this happen? What did Devers do?
The tensions between the Red Sox and Devers had been at an all time high just a month ago after Devers ripped into Craig Breslow Infront of the entire Boston media.
The controversy started after the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to take Devers’ spot at third base, kicking Devers to DH. Devers was upset with this but ultimately gave in.
The Triston Casas gets hurt. They ask Raffy to play first. Raffy suddenly loves DHing.
This was horribly handled by all parties. And now, the Red Sox have punted on the season.
But here’s the thing: I think we’re being misled.
FC Liverpool, an English soccer team that Fenway SPorts Group owns, just signed Florian Wirtz to a massive contract.
Days later… the highest-paid player in Red Sox history is dumped to San Francisco.
On top of that, reports have surfaced that the Red Sox didn’t even shop Devers around. As if they horrible return they got didn’t make it obvious.
I don’t even know what to say about this organization in the way it has been run since 2018. The Mookie Betts curse is on, and very dark days are ahead for this team.
Buckle up.
