BREAKING: Bruins Extend GM Don Sweeney

As the Boston Bruins head into the 2025 off-season looking to rebuild, general manager Don Sweeney has received a two-year contract extension, the team announced this morning.

Sweeney and the Bruins organization are coming off a difficult 2024-2025 season. The year began with Sweeney firing head coach Jim Montgomery just a few weeks into the season. Interim head coach Joe Sacco went 25-30-7 and the team missed the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Several cornerstone pieces were also dealt from the team at the trade deadline, including Brad Marchand, Charlie Coyle, and Brandon Carlo.

“Don has navigated a disappointing period for our club with conviction, purpose, and a clear vision toward the future of the Boston Bruins,” said Bruins President Cam Neely in a statement following the announcement. “I am confident in the plan he has followed these past few months – and excited for what’s to come for our team. The expectations in Boston have always been clear. It’s about winning championships.”

Neely has now made it clear that he is giving a full vote of confidence to Sweeney.

Reactions around Bruins Nation have been mixed at best, with several hardcore fans disappointed in the move.
