After a hot start to the season, Trevor Story has rapidly plummeted into being the worst hitter in the Red Sox lineup.
With a putrid .594 OPS, Story is doing considerable damage to the team by staying in the batting order.
In just 52 games played, Story has struck out 65 times. That feels almost difficult to be that bad.
He can’t hit anything over 95 MPH, and whiffs at every breaking ball on the outside part of the zone.
If Cora keeps him in the lineup long enough, Story will fall below the Mendoza line in short order, as he is hitting .222 as of today.
Everyone marvels at Story’s glove at shortstop, which is a premier position on the field. But at what point do we say enough is enough, and admit he is doing more harm than good?
Following an untimely injury to Alex Bregman, the Red Sox finally called up Marcelo Mayer from Worcester. If Mayer outperforms Story by the time Bregman returns, Cora will have to bench Story and play Mayer at shortstop.
But will Cora actually do it? Well, with how poorly he has managed this team all year, I see no reason to believe he will make the right decision on anything until further notice.
With the Red Sox floundering and injuries piling up, Trevor Story embodies the team’s failures so far this year. If he keeps this up, he’ll find himself playing for the Yomiuri Giants in no time.
