When it’s all said and done, Bill Belichick will be remembered as one of, if not the greatest, football coach of all time. But his very public and bizarre downfall has undoubtedly tarnished his public image, and an entire section of any most-mortum biography about Bill’s life will need to include what is currently transpiring.
Exiled from the NFL
Following the departure of Tom Brady, Belichick and the Patriots spiraled into becoming one of the worst teams in football over a 4 year stretch, which ended with Belichick being fired from the Patriots.
Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft publicly spun the firing as a “mutual separation”, but in a podcast interview about a year later, Kraft undercut Belichick and stated that he fired him.
Belichick spent the 2024 offseason looking for a job. As the weeks and months went by, new coaches around the league were getting hired left and right, with the greatest coach ever still just waiting on the sideline.
By the end of the offseason, Bill was left jobless. Could it be because of his old age and public sentiment that he’s lost a step? Absolutely. But NBC’s Mike Florio later confirmed that Belichick burned so many bridges across that league that no one would hire him for personal merit alone.
Bill’s nearly three-decade run of being the biggest bully in pro sports came back to bite him, and left him to resort to finding employment at UNC for the 2025 college football season. What a fall from grace.
Jordon Hudson
Around this time, Belichick was publicly seen with his 24-year-old girlfriend for the first time. Oh, by the way, Belichick is 73.
The public was initially turned off by the relationship, as you would expect, but nobody paid too much attention until Bill started dragging her to public events.
Hudson would even appear in a Dunkin commercial with Belichick in the Super Bowl, making the relationship public to the entire world.
As the months went by, Hudson would post photos with Belichick on Instagram doing cute poses and acting like they’re in a high school relationship.
There were later videos of the 24-year-old Hudson on the football field with Belichick at official UNC practices.
It all came to a head this week in a CBS interview Belichick did for his new book release. In the interview, CBS explained that Hudson was a “constant presence”. The clip from the piece that has gone viral was when interviewer Tony Dokoupil asked Belichick when the couple met. Jordon interjected off-camera and said, “We’re not talking about this.”
Since the incident, the entire situation has been a whirlwind. Reports of Hudson interrupting more than what was shown, speculation on how the couple met and if it was nefarious, reports of Bill’s family not liking Hudson, and speculation on whether Belichick is being taken advantage of.
The last part seems almost certain at this point: Belichick is being fully taken advantage of. Bold prediction: This saga will end in Belichick getting fired from UNC, breaking up with Hudson, and Hudson having a meltdown on social media.
Good going, Bill.
